In response to intensifying protests against immigration raids, US President Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles. This decision follows rising tensions between federal agents and demonstrators, with the protests gaining momentum over several days.
The unrest started after federal authorities initiated immigration enforcement raids in Los Angeles, particularly focusing on the suburb of Paramount. As protests began to spread, federal agents, wearing protective gas masks, clashed with the crowds, using flash-bang grenades and tear gas to disperse them. What initially began as peaceful demonstrations soon became more confrontational as agents engaged protesters near a Home Depot, which was being used as a base for the immigration officers.
On Saturday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the deployment of National Guard troops, stating that they were being sent to help control the rising lawlessness in the area. “The Trump administration remains committed to maintaining order and preventing further violence against law enforcement,” she said.
California’s Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, publicly criticized the decision, calling it “intentionally provocative”. He argued that the local authorities were already managing the situation without the need for additional federal troops. “We are coordinating with local law enforcement to ensure that the situation does not escalate,” he said.
The protests were a direct reaction to high-profile immigration raids that took place across the city. Federal agents, wearing masks, conducted workplace raids, sparking public outcry and drawing crowds to protest the actions. Some demonstrators were seen waving Mexican flags and even burning a US flag in protest. Others created roadblocks with items like cement blocks and shopping carts to prevent law enforcement from advancing.
Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles addressed the turmoil, acknowledging the sense of fear in the community. She reminded the public that peaceful protest is a right protected by the constitution but also warned that violence would not be tolerated. “Those who engage in violent actions will face legal consequences,” she added firmly.
In an effort to maintain control, the FBI made multiple arrests, and roadblocks were implemented. Authorities also closed off portions of the freeway to prevent further disruption and control the flow of protesters.
The situation in Los Angeles highlights the growing division over the issue of immigration enforcement in the United States. Los Angeles is one of the most ethnically diverse cities, with a significant Hispanic and Latino population, particularly in the Paramount area, which is 82% Hispanic or Latino, according to the latest US Census data.
